Do you want a FREE copy of "Reaching the Goal - How Managers Improve a Services Business Using Goldratt's Theory of Constraints"
I have one review copy of John Rickett's new Theory of Constraints book "Reaching the Goal" to give away, compliments of the publishers.
Congratulations to Grant Boston, who won the book.
Here's my quick review:
TOC has an outstanding record in manufacturing and here Rickett's has cleverly adopted the TOC applications and thinking to suit service industries. I know TOC well, I work in the services industry, and I've learned a lot from reading it. It is not (imho) an easy book for TOC newbies. I'd have liked a few more concrete examples - my mind works that way, and I hope John will add those in the 2nd edition. It's a very good book - I suspect in a year or so once the ideas have sunk in and I've tried them - that I'll be describing it as a classic.
If you'd like a free copy ... then leave a brief comment below and on Tuesday morning (GMT) I'll pick the winner (randomly ). If you are the lucky winner then I'll contact you for your details and then I'll ask the publishers to post the copy out.
[I published a series of questions & answers with John about his book, here]

Hi I've started reading the book in http://safari.informit.com
I agree with you it could benefit from more examples.
And I would also like more "Clouds" to be drawn there.
But it is a good book.. and was really needed.
I obviously would like to have a printed copy to finish reading it.
Reading in the screen still doesn't compare to a good old fashion paper book

Clarke, Would love a copy. You helped me out by coaching me through applications of TOC and use of clouds to working in the public school system. Thanks,
Michael

Hi Clark,
I enjoyed Goldratt's books so much that I "forced" my wife to read them and she is now a convert. She wants to apply the techniques in her health services role, John Rickett's book sounds ideal for both of us. Thanks

Hi Clark - count me in!

It would be quite interesting to read this book.
The concept of 'time' as buffer only cracked through my head when I first saw an example of service industry. Like, you can not plan for a 'stock buffer of customers' (like raw materials) in a bank unless the customer visits the bank, OR a patient comes to a hospital for checking...
Looking forward to read the book.
(one caution, don't choose me for the book - the courier charge from Scotland to India would be double the price of the book itself ;-)) Why don't you try posting a full-fledged review of the book ? It would help us a lot...

Hey Clarke, isn't it a non-zero-sum game you're playing here? ;) Count me in too! The postal charge, even to India, will be well worth it.
